Let's face it. Every Vodkaphile knows that no two vodkas are alike. And no two tasters are alike. So how do you know the difference between good vodkas and so-so brands? By which has the coolest bottle? Not.
The way we see it, there are two ways to sort out the vodka from the rotgut:
Consumer Taste-Offs: get together enough people with differing, subjective tastes and taste several vodkas blind. We have done this four times. In our most recent event, dozens of Vodkaphiles gathered at a resort in Massachusetts to sample some of the world's best super-premium vodkas. The results are posted over in our News section.
Expert Tastings: get together some self-styled and/or industry accepted "experts" to rate vodkas either blind or not blind. This we are also doing. Since our experts are spread out across the country, the blind approach is not open to us. But we like to think our experts are returning some useful and interesting reviews. The tips we have posted here for tasting and reviewing vodkas are very similar to the guidelines our panel experts are following.
Visitors to Vodkaphiles can also submit their own reviews and comments about different vodkas. And you can read the reviews here as well.
Meanwhile, we have posted here summaries of 16 premium vodkas--those we tasted in the Third Annual Vodka Taste-Off. Enjoy!
